WINNERS NAMED IN
THE MARION POPCORN FESTIVAL’S
FINE ARTS SHOW 

MARION, OH – Judging for the 27th annual Marion Popcorn Festival juried Fine Arts Show was held Wednesday night at Marion City Hall on West Center Street.   

Winning the coveted Best of Show was Jennifer McConnaughey with “Generations” in the photography category.  This honor brings with it a cash award of $100.   

The winner of the $25 Mid-Ohio Fine Arts Society Award was Kris Hyland Kolb with “Harmony” in the medium of photography. 

Cash awards and ribbons were also given to the first ($50), second ($25), and third ($10) place winners in each of four categories:  Painting (includes oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel); Drawing (pencil, ink, and charcoal); Other- Two Dimensional (photography); and Other – Three Dimensional (sculpture, glass, pottery, fiber, wood carving, mixed media, etc.).  Entries were judged on quality, creativity, and appearance.

Winners in the Painting category included:

First Place:   Beth Newcomer-“Tyler Murphy”-watercolor
Second Place:         Virginia Duffey-“Jim’s Hat”-pastel
Third Place:  Tim Gorenflo-“On A Clear Day”-oil Pastel
Merit:            Jay Johnston- “Jack Dempsey”-oil
Merit:            Barbara Fitzgerd-“Here I Am”-acrylic

Winners in the Drawing category:

First Place:   Betty Newcomer-“Paige Moslby”-scratch board
Second Place:         Carolle Neidhardt-“Old Wyatt House”-graphite
Third Place:  Michelle McCleary-“Erica”-colored pencil
Merit:            Michelle McCleary-“Lean”-graphite
Merit:            Tim Dickenson-“Let’s Play”-colored pencil

Winners in the Other – Two Dimensional category were:

First Place:   Matt McGraw-untitled-photography
Second Place:         Jim Hill-“Wamplers Lake”-photography
Third Place:  Joan Hatcher-“Live with Enthusiasm”-collage
Merit:            Kristi Line-“Mumbah”-photography
Merit:            Richard Kolb-“Jazz Hands”-photography

Winners in the Other – Three Dimensional category were:

First Place:   Linda Smith-“Dad”-mosaic quilt
Second Place:         Chris Saylor-“Visit To The Doctors”-metal scul
Third Place:  Joan Hatcher-“What Time Is It On Your Journey”-collage
Merit:            Carroll Neidhardt-“Storms’ Aftermath”-collage
Merit:            Deboral Welch-“Hawapi”-pottery

Those visiting the Fine Arts show will also be able to vote for the “People’s Choice” award.  That recognition will garner the recipient $50.   

The panel of judges who had the difficult task of determining the winners were Lew Lause, Lannette Davis, and Marie Denton.  Lew Lause, with forty-two years of experience in commercial photography, has studios in both downtown Marion and Lima, Ohio.  Lannette Davis, an artist, is the owner of “Lannette’s Art Loft” located above Davis Realty on Church Street in downtown Marion.  Marie Denton is a self taught artist and potter.  She is the owner of “Black Box Gallery” located in downtown Marion on Center Street. 

The Marion Popcorn Festival Fine Arts Show is sponsored by Badertscher Communications and is presented in conjunction with the Mid Ohio Fine Arts Society.  All artwork will be displayed throughout the entire Festival in a gallery-type atmosphere in the lobby of Marion’s City Hall.
